The New Year is just round the corner and I am sure most of us would be thinking of forming New Year resolutions. I thought it’d be a good time to ask this question.

In fact in you read closely, this has a couple of questions in one. One of course is finding the scope of improvement in you as an individual and second is about how well you know yourself (this would perhaps require you to think more)

This question is intended to capture your opinion as a sample survey.

What’s your answer?

1. I don’t know what I want
2. I know what I want but I am not sure how to get there.
3. I know what I want but I know how to get there

PS – I’m assuming that we’d speak up even if we have “I don’t know what I want” and “I know what I want but I am not sure how to get there”

This survey report will also be published at this blog.

Thanks a lot for your inputs.

Wel! … New year resolution…interesting…
I am planning to launch my own label “VIBES” (fashion house)
So as to accomplish this goal most important is hard work, lot of creativity, designing and stuff.
And I think… may be Lot other Business terms… Or I say Fashion terms… Management terms…etc
But Above all these terms (in which I m perfect at) I plan to do a little more of something:
-Believing in myself a little more
-Trusting myself a little more
-Letting go of all the fear, anger and regret
-Knowing that it is ok just to be who I am.

I don't know exactly what I want, and beyond that, I'm horribly untalented when it comes to self-promotion.

Dear Ankur,
I might as well fall into the second category though I would love to believe that the third option is what I really am.
I know what I want and also seemingly know how to get there but as I try to tread on the path it starts to seem that I never knew it.
I would quote two examples one from Jawahar lal Nehru, he talks about it in "Discovery of India" when he tries to point out that ignorance is a bliss because the more you know about something the more confused you are because things all of a sudden seem to be so complicated.
The second one is a more pratical example where in try visiting a foreign land with a map in tow, the map seems to be not correct because it doesn't talk about everything thats there to surprise you.
Having said all of that I know that I am confused and the cure might be a mentor who can guide me through this maze (Bhool Bhulaiya). As i pointed out ignorance is a bliss, I know that I need a mentor but how to get one, perhaps I don't have an answer for that.

Regards,
Pratik

People want to be different things at differetn point of time. You aspire to be something based on your understanding of your chosen carrer and later realise that the whole landscape has changed which forces you to change your goals. What you want to be can be set for short term goals. How you get there is a completwly different story.

Sometimes I feel I know what i want to do. I have very recently evaluated my skills and experience and tried to look at different places where my skills can be allpied and based on some facts amd some assumptions, I have decided on what I want to do for the next few months.

How to do it depends on a lot of external factors too. You may make a plan that will help you in doing what you want to do and achieve what you want to achieve but the real skill is in knowing what to do when your plans seem to fail and things don't go as anticipated.

It's very good question , when u really want to know yourself.

About me , I fit in all category at different time of my life.

Right now I am in 3rd phase. "I know what I want and I know how to get there" , but I don't know what happens , I could not reach out to that.

In my life I want to do something which will take me so high and build one standard in my own. But I don't know how ? :)

All in all , I don't know what I want .

Cheers,
Vikas

I know what I want and I know how to get there.

It's just with the hectic lifestyle I have, I do not have enough time to upgrade my missing academics and professional skills.

Hey Ankur,

A very thought provoking question.
I know what I want, but unfortunately its not on the menu ;)
In all seriousness though, my answer would be option 2.
Working smartly (minimal redundancy or donkey work), understanding and coping with team dynamics (not a people person yet) and deadlines ( i want the work done yesterday) is something i am hoping to be good at (good enough to make my professional experience a positive one) very soon.
If you or anyone else reading this have some pearls of wisdom(or harsh experiences) to share please feel free to reach me at

I know what I want, I know how to get there, and I believe I'm on the path. That applies to every aspect of my life. I feel grateful and happy that my path, although a long and winding one, has brought me to where I am today.

LinkedIn is a huge part of this equation. As a LinkedIn employee I'm proud to work with the caliber of people and level of talent we have here. We are all so excited and enthusiastic about what we are doing to make LinkedIn the world-class organization that it is destined to become.

As a Yoga instructor and student, I'm finding my physical, spiritual and mental facilities becoming stronger and more centered, which has manifested in a strong sense of who I am and what I can do to make things better for me, my family and my friends.

In my personal life, I have been lucky enough to have amazing friends and support systems. We help and support each other and have learned the importance of "extended family". I'm grateful that my teenage son and I are extremely close and honest with each other and I never really have to worry too much about where his headspace is.

So yeah...Life is good!
Onward and Upward!!!

Great question!

I don't think I'm missing any skill, and if I did, I would find it easier to outsource the task to someone else who's mastered that skill. :-)

What I'm probably missing is the secret knowledge about how to create a "social-nuclear infrastructure" so that my knowledge, intellectual assets and instructional capital (proprietary workshops, etc.) can be rapidly circulated to thousands of people in a sort of "nuclear chain reaction" (that is, where one person receiving the knowledge can turn around and share it with 2 to 20 other people, and the latter people repeat this process until everybody, so to speak, knows what I know.

I've discovered in 2007 that "if I know, I don't have to do. Others can do for me." But if I don't know, I can do a lot of stuff and still never discover the knowledge I need to have.

I would say that "I know what I want, but don't know what I feel I need to know for it to happen." But this doesn't bother me too much, because the required knowledge keeps revealing itself to me in the form of surprising ideas that inexplicably come from nowhere and are born in my little head!

I know what I want in my life, where I want to reach in my life. I also know how I want to reach there. However, sometimes I feel that I do not have enough time. Sometimes, I also feel that I should have better communication skills. I need to work on ”Speech Modulation”.
Thanks for asking this.

hi Ankur

My answer is "I know what I want AND I know how to get there", but enroute this journey, between the two ends, there are situations that are called 'challenges', and if they could be identified ahead of time and get solutions, then the success is guaranteed. But the beauty is GOD is in control of these situations and does not reveal them earlier than necessary to mankind........a bit philosophical but very practical if we observe our day to day life...........

Hi Ankur,

Naturally one has to fall in all three categories, at one point or the other under different situations, depending on one’s experience with happenings around and with degree of thoughts.

The postings from Vikas Kanade and Tim Tymchyshyn seem to be profuse in thought.

I know what I want nad how to get there, what;s missing for me is being a good self promoter.

I know what I want but I do not know how to get there is my answer for the moment.

I am interested in changing careers period. I have good skills that are already developed. I also have years of experience in my former career choice. I am in the process of learning how to reinvent myself as a professional. Where I will eventually end up in my quest remains to be discovered.

This is a good question. I had to think about what my personal and professional goals are for this year.

I have trouble figuring out lies. In my profession it is extremely important to be able to assess when a client is telling the truth and when he is lying. But here I am, all the time believeing the client - and sometimes that works against the treatment.

Because I personally don't lie, I have no personal experience and can't get into client's shoes when this happens.

I don't know how to get there.....

Ankur

I will have to throw you a bit of a curve. I know what I want, I want to keep learning. What exactly I learn is more open than specific. Having just completed a Masters degree and in the middle of another I have been surrounded for several years with learning about finance, accounting, management, change leadership, communication to name a few. Developing three blogs in the past six months I have relished the opportunity to learn about this avenue of communication. Being a teacher at heart I welcome each new opportunity. Having been promoted at work a few months ago there are so many new things to learn about their.

My approach to 2008 is to be fully awake and alive seeking out those things that capture the attention of and the imagination of my curiosity. These I will dig into, roll around in and soak up the learnings from.

Happy New Year

Hi Ankur,

I guess the skills i lack are to find myself a `Godfather' ... :))

Once i do that life will be easier... Know of one??? :))

Monday, January 07, 2008 1:16:00 AM

What skills are you missing to get what you want?

I know what I want and I am on the path to getting there ... but getting the necessary skills requires support from people around me and that is not always easy to get. Most people work on the 'give and take' philosophy ... but that is if you can figure what they want and if you can give it to them.

Monday, January 07, 2008 1:16:00 AM

I would say I'm a split between 2 & 3. I'm pretty sure what I want and how to get it, but my problem is is that it's just not time yet. Experience, network, life is not where it needs to be in order for me to get there.

I don't know what I want (at this time)

I have a lot of areas of interest and a lot of great assests, but am not sure where my talents would be best used. I know that I have a lot to offer but also know that I require a few "special circumstances" to fit my life. So there are times that I feel what I want isn't acheivable at this point in my life due to those special requirements. I never rule out those wants - I just put them in the categaory of "not at this time" and move on to something that I know is acheivable right now.

Personal development, no matter what your "special circumstances" are, is something everyone needs to work towards. Whether it be professional, spiritual, financial, health... we all need to have goals and put forth 100% effort in acheiving those goals. This is a key ingredient to success (no matter what shape success takes for you).

Wednesday, January 09, 2008 12:58:00 AM

I'm in the middle of a career change - telecom engineer now, renewable energy project developer next. I think I am moving quite quickly towards where I need to be, but there is a sense of urgency given the economy, finances, and the environment ... it can't happen quick enough to suit me.

Wednesday, January 09, 2008 12:59:00 AM

As of now, I know what I want and I know how to get there.
